For doctors

The IKEM Cardiology Department is a highly specialised cardiology unit that provides the full scope of care for patients with cardiovascular diseases in the Czech Republic. It forms part of the IKEM Cardiology Centre.

The Interventional Cardiology Division provides 24-hour operation for invasive treatment of myocardial infarction using direct percutaneous coronary intervention. The unit also performs other therapeutic catheter procedures, such as closures of the atrial or ventricular septal defects and implantations of artificial valves. Some diagnostic interventions are done as one-day procedures while the patient stays at the day care centre.

The Arrhythmology Division performs the widest spectrum of catheter ablations (therapeutic interventions that make it possible to remove various types of arrhythmia using catheters), particularly ablations of atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachyarrhythmia. The unit is one of several leading world centres with experience in catheter ablations using a robotic system. It is a centre with many years of tradition and experience in implantations of pacemakers and cardioverter-defibrillators.

The Non-Invasive Cardiology Division disposes of all modern techniques of non-invasive diagnostic methods for cardiovascular diseases. About 18,000 echocardiographic assessments are performed at the division annually.

The Heart Failure Division provides assessments of patients with heart failure and their comprehensive therapy including the transplantation programme and patient monitoring after heart transplantation. The division is also starting to provide monitoring of patients with implantable mechanical supports.

The Acute Cardiology Division has replaced the original coronary unit as it treats a broad spectrum of acute conditions in cardiology, not only patients with acute myocardial infarction. Ever more patients have been treated for acute decompensation of heart failure or for serious arrhythmias and other conditions. This division also includes an acute admission unit where differential diagnosis of acute conditions is performed, including acute or scheduled electrical cardioversion procedures.

Both wards provide bed facilities for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and, furthermore, for the therapy of a number of cardiovascular diseases.

In terms of science, the IKEM Cardiology Department is one of our leading research sites in cardiology. The department is engaged in a number of scientific grant projects and clinical studies focused on modern therapeutic procedures or technologies. The IKEM Cardiology Department thus ranks among advanced European centres.

The IKEM Cardiology Department also serves as a training centre for future doctors as well as for future specialists in cardiology. It organises a number of teaching events every year including live transmissions from catheterisation theatres. Thanks to cooperation with the media, the department seeks to popularise cardiology and open up the problems of cardiovascular diseases accessible to patients.

This website should help you to become acquainted with the department, its major programmes and therapeutic care standards. It should help your patients to be able to become our joint patients. We shall welcome any comments that may contribute to the further enhancement of our cooperation.
