At the department we perform surgeries of the colon for inflammations, tumours and other diseases of the colon.
Before such a surgery the patient must visit the outpatient office of the surgery with their current medical report. The doctor at the outpatient office evaluates the findings, explains the disease to the patient and proposes therapeutic options. In justified cases, the doctor prepares documentation of the patient for its review by the so-called multidisciplinary team. This team discusses the case, determines further steps and documents them in writing; subsequently, the doctor informs the patient about the proposed procedure(s). If the patient is diagnosed with a disease not treated at IKEM or a therapeutic procedure not performed at IKEM is proposed, all documentation is given to the patient and the patient is recommended centre(s) to be contacted regarding the proposed therapy.
If the patient has a disease treated at IKEM and is indicated for a routinely performed surgery, the doctor at the outpatient office determines the date of surgery for the patient. At the same time, the patient receives a medical report for their general practitioner or the referring doctor and a list of preoperative assessments to be done by their general practitioner no more than two weeks before the surgery. The patient should bring the results of these assessments to the admission office.
Some diseases of the colon including, for example, colorectal cancer are relatively common in the population of the Czech Republic. We value the interest of every patient and would like to welcome all. However, we cannot satisfy all interested persons for operational reasons. We primarily operate on patients after organ transplantations or patients with other serious diseases (for example of the heart), which makes the surgery a high-risk procedure for them. As regards colorectal cancer, we also focus primarily on cases with liver metastases that are suitable for surgical removal (see “Liver surgery”).
