Transplantation of islets of Langerhans

Transplantation of the islets of Langerhans can be considered in patients with the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus who cannot undergo pancreas transplantation for some reason. These islets produce insulin in non-diabetic persons. The principle of the transplantation consists in isolating these islets from an originally entire organ and in their subsequent infusion in the liver circulation of the recipient.
In cooperation with the Diabetology Department, our department offers these following three types of transplantations:
 - Autotransplantation of one’s own healthy islets of Langerhans in patients undergoing surgical removal of the entire pancreas
 - Isolated transplantation of the islets from a deceased donor
 - Simultaneous transplantation of the islets with a kidney from a deceased donor
