Our department is the only centre in the Czech Republic where pancreas transplantation is performed.
The procedure is indicated particularly in patients with the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus combined with a severe diabetic complication, most commonly renal failure. The first pancreas transplantation in the Czech Republic was performed at IKEM as early as in 1983.
Currently, more than thirty patients undergo pancreas transplantation every year. We occupy leading positions worldwide in the long term in regards to the ratio of transplantations and number of inhabitants. Thanks to long-term experience and a large number of transplanted patients, our results are comparable to those of prime world centres: one year from the surgery, more than 80% of patients after pankreas and kidney transplantation have both grafts functional without the need of insulin and haemodialysis.
