Provided care

Anaesthesiological care

We provide comprehensive care in the course of surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures: analgesia, pain treatment and securing of vital functions, their monitoring and support.

This care is most commonly provided for the following cardiosurgical procedures:

  • Aortocoronary reconstruction (with or without extracorporeal circulation), valvular procedures, procedures due to arrhythmias and combined procedures
  • Minimally invasive (transcatheter) valvular procedures
  • Implantation of short-term and long-term mechanical heart support devices
  • Heart transplantation
  • Combined heart and lung transplantation (in cooperation with the Third Department of Surgery of the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and University Hospital Motol)
  • Thoracic aorta procedures: (ascending, descending aorta and the aortic arch) including procedures performed under circulatory arrest with deep hypothermia. These are both elective procedures (thoracic aortic aneurysm) and urgent surgeries (dissection or traumatic involvement of the thoracic aorta).

Furthermore, we provide anaesthesiological care to patients of the IKEM Cardiology Centre who are indicated for the following procedures:

  • Electrophysiological assessment with ablation of arrhythmogenic foci
  • Minimally invasive (transcatheter) valvular procedures
  • Stent-graft implantation in thoracic aorta
  • Supervision of diagnostic interventions with a history of allergic reaction(s)

Intensive care

At the resuscitation unit we provide comprehensive intensive care, particularly to patients after cardiosurgical procedures.

Intensive care is provided in the multidisciplinary form, at the resuscitation unit with the total capacity of 16 beds. The unit has comprehensive instrumental equipment and we are able to offer our patients all current modern monitoring procedures together with mechanical and pharmacological support of organ functions of the heart and blood circulation, lungs, metabolic and renal functions.

  • Comprehensive monitoring and diagnostic processes including echocardiography (both oesophageal and transthoracic); continuous monitoring methods of the cardiac output (S-G catheter, LiDCO)
  • Pharmacological circulatory support (catecholamines, levosimendan and PDE III and V inhibitors, nitrogen monoxide inhalation)
  • Short-term and long-term mechanical circulatory support devices, VA-ECMO
  • Modern ventilatory regimens, puncture dilational tracheostomy and flexible bronchoscopy, nitrogen monoxide inhalation, VV-ECMO
  • Parenteral and enteral nutrition
  • Continuous elimination methods CVVH, CVVHD, CVVHDF, intermittent elimination methods (SLED, IHD), plasmapheresis

Comprehensive intensive care naturally includes high-quality nursing care provided by highly educated and experienced nurses and other personnel.
