About us

The Preventive Cardiology Centre (PCC) forms part of the Cardiology Centre of the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine in Prague.

PCC is a specialised outpatient centre that provides comprehensive care in the prevention and treatment of risk factors of civilisation diseases that can be influenced, with a special regard to cardiovascular diseases (CVD), chronic renal diseases, hypertension, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, carbohydrate metabolism disorders, obesity, smoking cessation or vascular pathological findings.

The team includes a clinical psychologist and nutritional therapist.

PCC performs outpatient assessments in patients referred by specialised doctors (internists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, nephrologists, diabetologists, obesitologists, angiologists and others). Most patients are also included in the long-term follow-up programme in cooperation with the referring doctor.

Primary CVD prevention includes a targeted search for persons with a high cardiovascular risk, intervention in the risk factors and detection of preclinical signs of atherosclerosis.

In the scope of secondary prevention, PCC controls risk factors in persons with manifested cardiovascular disease – PCC follows patients after myocardial infarction, after surgical treatment of ischaemic heart disease, after surgical management of serious valvular defects or a cerebrovascular event; in the scope of cardio-renal issues, followed patients include, for example, those after kidney transplantation, with chronic renal disease, both in the course of conservative therapy and after surgical therapy.

PCC provides care to patients with rather serious forms of heart rhythm disorders, valvular defects and chronic heart failure.

The unit provides comprehensive care to patients with obesity – conservative therapy, nutritional counselling including consultations with a clinical psychologist.

The unit performs one-time control examinations of all patients undergoing transplantation at IKEM.

Intervention in risk factors of IHD:

Hypertension
PCC has a unique position in the care for hypertonic patients, particularly those with the most severe forms of hypertension who require a combination of three and more antihypertensive drugs to achieve target blood pressure values. The unit cooperates with the divisions of endocrinology and nephrology in the field of secondary hypertension.

Dyslipidemia
The unit provides dietary interventions through the nutritional therapist, determination of the cardiovascular (CV) risk, ultrasound examination of the carotids, determining of the calcium score as part of the CV risk estimation, pharmacotherapy; the unit also recommends suitable activities to the patients.

Diabetes mellitus
In the scope of the Diabetes Consulting Centre, PCC provides patient education, sets proper pharmacotherapy, is engaged in prevention and follow-up of chronic organ complications of diabetes, with a particular focus on type 2 DM.

Obesity
In the scope of the Rational Food Consulting Centre, PCC provides dietary interventions, preparation and checking of the dietary regimen, measurement of body fat using the Inbody device, weight reduction using pharmacotherapy under specialised medical supervision; PCC also recommends physical activities based on the individual health condition. In serious cases, PCC cooperates with obesitology centres and the bariatric surgery discipline.

Smoking
The Tobacco Addiction Centre is available to patients. The centre provides comprehensive consulting services – both non-pharmacological and pharmacological. The team includes a psychologist. The centre provides laboratory assessments, tests of expired air and based on their results it recommends an optimal individual treatment to its clients.

The unit has top technical equipment. In addition to laboratory assessments, in the scope of diagnostic procedures and determination of further therapeutic steps the unit also offers ultrasonographic devices for tests of the heart, abdominal aorta, intra- and extracerebral arteries, arteries and veins of lower limbs, 24-hour blood pressure and ECG monitoring, for the tilt test, and for exercise examination of the circulatory system.
