The laboratory provides the background for in vivo metabolic studies in man that use clamp techniques, clearance methods, the indirect calorimetry method, biopsy of subcutaneous fatty tissue, muscle tissue and the skin, oral glucose tolerance tests and a number of functional tests. The laboratory can test the endothelial function through non-invasive assessments using an Endopat device and monitor sleep apnoea using an Apnea Link device.

The following topics are studied in annotations of grant projects

  • Pathophysiological mechanisms and metabolic consequences of insulin resistance in healthy persons and diabetic patients or in patients with the metabolic syndrome (endocrine and metabolic activity of fatty tissue, endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress).

  • Effect of nutritional interventions on insulin resistance, insulin secretion and other metabolic parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes.

  • Collections of genetic materials and phenotyping of the set of patients monitored at the CD outpatient office for the needs of studying the genetic determination of the development of insulin resistance and long-term complications of type 1 and 2 diabetes.

  • The effect of food composition on the feeling of satiety and satisfaction. Follow-up monitoring using functional magnetic resonance imaging to explore the responsible CNS areas in the set of patients with type 2 diabetes, obese patients without diabetes with metabolic syndrome and in healthy persons.

  • The effect of introducing an implantable duodenojejunal bypass in the gastrointestinal tract on reduced weight and other metabolic parameters (sensitivity to insulin, other metabolic and hormonal indicators).

  • Cardioprotective and metabolic effects of metformin in patients with heart failure and diabetes.

The laboratory also provides some routine laboratory assessments for clinical purposes and performs tests of peripheral and vegetative neuropathy, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring and indirect calorimetry. Among others, clinical testing of drugs is performed at the laboratory. Laboratory employees cooperate in the management of a database of patients receiving insulin pump therapy.
