The IKEM Preventive Cardiology Department is a specialist outpatient workplace providing comprehensive care for the prevention and treatment of modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.
The department focuses primarily on the primary and secondary prevention of circulatory system diseases.
Primary prevention includes targeted searching for people at high risk of cardiovascular diseases, intervention in the risk factors and detection of pre-clinical signs of atherosclerosis.
For secondary prevention, check-ups are carried out for risk factors in people already showing signs of cardiovascular disease - outpatient care for patients who have suffered from myocardial infarct, bypasses, arrhythmias (e.g. atrial fibrillation), chronic heart failure, or care for transplant patients who have experienced cerebrovascular problems.
In 2010, the Tobacco Addiction Clinic was opened to treat those addicted to tobacco. This new clinic will also contribute to decreasing health complications caused by smoking.
