Patient admission to the ward

Patients are admitted to the ward in the urgent or scheduled mode.

Scheduled admission takes place according to admission proposals created in the hospital information system of IKEM. These proposals include information about the diagnosis and reason of admission. The term of hospitalisation or justification of its rejection, as appropriate, is determined by the senior consultant of the ward by making a record in the proposal.

Patients are invited for hospitalisation by the personnel of the Central admission office (CAO). Patients who are scheduled for an endoscopic or other invasive procedure are informed about the date by the treating doctor and the date is indicated in the proposal. Patient admission for endoscopic procedures is adapted by the head of the ward only if sufficient free beds cannot be provided for the given day.

At the time of scheduled admission for institutional care, patients report at the Central admission office. Admission documents are prepared here and an employee of the CAO accompanies the patient to the ward where the patient is handed over to the admitting nurse. This nurse brings the patient to their room, introduces the patient to the other patients and informs the patient about the operating rules of the department and about patient rights. The admitting nurse takes care of the storage of personal objects in a cabinet in the room, lends out institutional clothes as appropriate, puts any valuables and larger sums of money in the safe and issues a certificate.

Patients are invited for liver transplantation and their transport is ordered by the clinical coordinator. Outside working hours, the patients are invited and their transport is ordered by the doctor on duty. Transplantation recipients are chosen upon agreement of the transplant surgeon and doctor on duty at the DH.

Daily operation at the ward

Operation at the ward starts at 6 am with patient hygiene and blood collections. The night nurse measures morning temperatures and diuresis values.

The morning round at the ward, organised by the treating doctor, takes place from 8 am – 10 am. A round is organised once a week by the senior consultant of the ward (Monday) and by the director of the department (Tuesday). The transplantation round takes place once weekly, every Thursday.

Afternoon rest in bed is recommended to patients after their lunch, until 2:30 pm.

Walk leaves for spending time within the hospital premises are allowed in the afternoon hours from 3 pm – 5 pm, or to 6 pm during summer months.

The afternoon round is held by the treating doctor between 3 pm and 3:45 pm; the evening round starts at 6:30 pm.

Shared TV watching in the canteen is allowed at all times except the rounds, in the evening until 22:00, later only upon approval by the emergency service doctor

The night-time silence period is from 10 pm – 6 am in the morning.

Visits of patients are allowed every day from 1 pm – 8:30 pm, and from 1 pm – 9 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Leave permits that enable patients to leave the premises of the hospital are allowed by the senior consultant of the ward upon proposal of the treating doctor.

Meals are issued 5 times a day, breakfast + snack at 7:30 am – 8 am, lunch + snack at 11:45 am – 12:30 pm, and dinner + second dinner at 6 pm – 6:30 pm. The dietary regimen is determined by the treating doctor and implemented by the dietary nurse. Meals are brought to the beds of bedridden patients; other patients eat in the canteen.

Regular exchange of patient clothes and bed clothes takes place 1 time a week, every day at the intermediate room, or at any time if needed.

Information about the health condition of a patient is provided only to persons indicated by the patient. The information is provided by the treating doctor, doctor on duty, and based on seriousness of the situation also by the senior consultant of the ward or director of the department.

Complaints are received by the treating doctor, or alternatively by the senior consultant of the ward or the director of the department. Complaints are promptly submitted, unchanged, to the main controller of IKEM. Upon agreement with the main controller, complaints are handled by the senior consultant of the ward and/or by the director of the department or a person authorised by them.
